I had responsibilities that could not be ignored, yet I seemed to have no adequate resources to meet them.
Fear began to take over. Worry followed closely behind, and anxiety became a constant companion. I kept asking myself, Will I pull through? Will my family survive? What will happen if things continue this way?
Even prayer became difficult.
There are moments in life when the weight of circumstances becomes so heavy that even the words we normally use in prayer seem to disappear. That was where I found myself. I needed divine and immediate help, but I felt too overwhelmed even to express myself properly before God.
Then God reminded me of Philippians 4:6–7:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV)
I knelt down and prayed with the little strength I had.
It was not an eloquent prayer. It was not a long prayer. I simply cried out to God from the depths of my heart.
I told Him that I had reached the edge of my human ability. I reminded myself that the very fears, worries, burdens and anxieties that were overwhelming me had already been taken to the cross.
I did not need to carry what Christ had already carried.
That realization began to change something within me.
The circumstances had not immediately changed, but my heart began to change.
A deep sense of peace began to settle within me. God reminded me that the situation was not ultimately dependent on my human strength, wisdom, connections or ability to figure everything out. I had to trust Him, even when I could not understand what He was doing.
I spoke to my landlord and to others I owed. I cannot fully explain how the conversations unfolded, but God gave me wisdom and favor. I was given sufficient time to work through the debts.
Looking back, I believe God was guiding even the words I spoke. Had I spoken purely from fear and desperation, the outcome could have been very different.
But God gave me grace to respond rather than react.
And then, within that same week, help came from people I least expected.
The situation that had appeared impossible began to shift.
God had not abandoned me.
He had been teaching me something deeper than how to solve a financial problem.
That taught me an important lesson: God's peace is not always the absence of trouble; sometimes it is His presence in the middle of trouble.
Philippians 4:7 says that the peace of God surpasses human understanding.
I experienced something of that peace.
Today, when I face difficult circumstances, I remember that season of my life.
And I learned that what Christ has finished on the cross is enough.
Perhaps you are facing your own impossible situation today. Perhaps you are asking, “How will I survive? How will this work out? Where will the help come from?”
You may not have all the answers.
But you have Christ.
Because the God who sustained you yesterday is still faithful today, and He will remain faithful tomorrow.
