Embrace the Grit

Grace is a word ushering in feelings of warmth, charm, and niceties. In our worldly view, grace takes on a meaning that our finite minds work to makes sense of. The question, then, we must grapple with is what is the meaning of grace? Is it when we ask God to bless our food? Perhaps it’s a name we are choosing for our soon-to-be-born daughter? On a more serious note, is it when we beg for pardon from a friend or loved one that we are desperate to be back in their good “graces”?

Webster’s dictionary defines grace as: 1) Seemingly effortless beauty or charm of movement, form, or proportion; 2) A characteristic or quality pleasing for its charm or refinement; or 3) A sense of fitness or propriety. This worldly perspective that we adopt fits well with what Websters definitions entail.

A far greater and deeper meaning of grace originates from the One who is and was and always will be.

Titus 2:11 says “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people…” It’s a grace that has been revealed. What did this grace look like?

It is God Himself, clothed in humanity, given the name Jesus, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace, and Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6). He did not consider His equality as something to be exploited (Philippians 2:6). It is a life lived full of sufferings and rejection from the very ones He created. A grace that never retaliated and can only be received as a gift. Salvation for all people forces us to look upon a blood-soaked cross and bow the knee and acknowledge something way beyond our human capability to understand. Gritty grace drove our God to the cross Himself, violently tortured and crucified so that we may receive this gift of grace and be saved from the wrath that is coming our way.

Ephesians 2:4,8: “But God who is rich in mercy, because of His great love for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is God’s gift.”

This grace so freely given to us came with a price. The beauty of it came through a Savior who suffered in the most gruesome way. Whether we embrace it or not, it remains the most precious and beautiful language ever known to mankind. The world begs us to believe that grace is charming, a pleasing quality, or a form of beauty. God’s grace is based on extending His mercy and love to us and providing a way to escape His torturous wrath. The grit of His grace; lean into this truth and embrace it!
