But that was before the recent tension between the United States and China had begun. The US was in “trade wars” with China, and the fragile, even somewhat combative, relationship was all over the news.
“They wouldn’t be going if it wasn’t safe,” her husband tried to reassure her. His statement did little to ease her anxiety.
One week into the trip, Carrie lashed out when her older son joked about an antiCommunist meme he had texted Benjamin. She made him promise her that he would NEVER again send any such text message.
“Jeez, mama. OK. OK. I will never again send anything, but ‘Hey, Ben, is China really as great as everyone says it is?” he said somewhat sarcastically.
Carrie put a sticky note on her bathroom mirror to remind her to pray for her second son daily; as if she needed a reminder, her husband chided. She counted down the days until Benjamin would be back on US soil, and prayed constantly.
One morning when it had been longer than normal since they had heard from Benjamin, Carrie’s Bible study had her in Deuteronomy, specifically chapter 33. Moses was giving the different blessings to the twelve tribes of Israel.
“And of Benjamin he said, the beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by Him: and the Lord shall cover him all the day long and he shall dwell between His shoulders.” (Deut.33:12 King James).
The words literally jumped off the page to Carrie and pierced her heart. She was sure she had read these verses before, but never had they struck her the way they did this morning. She often took refuge in God’s Word, but never before had it been so concrete, and instantaneous. Carrie wept at God’s tender kindness. Some of the Israelite tribes received wealth or peace or expanding borders, but Benjamin received protection.
Just as her Benjamin would.

Well done, thank you for sharing a piece of your heart and family with us.
Praying for Ben's safe return!
Well done!

I 100% agree with you. God’s Word is pure and how delightful is He to reassure a mother’s heart.
I had a similar experience and He did exactly what He said He would. Brought my boy home from a Naval tour of duty in a conflict area.
