As the pastor’s voice trailed on, my thoughts were with Cecilia.
One of the last sentences she said to me was “Sue, don’t ever forget me!”
“No, Cecilia I won’t,” I said, fully realizing what it meant. I often prayed for her.
Homer suddenly got up…he wiped his cheeks with the palm of his hands. It seemed everybody was holding their breath.
He reached the lectern and leaned on it. The pastor stepped aside. Homer’s son-in-law moved to the edge of his seat.
Homer stood still for a while, breathing deeply. His skin was sallow, his eyes red and swollen.
“I miss her so much. She was my world; she was my ruby, beautiful, rare, and strong. I miss her.”
His son-in-law jumped up, just in time to grab Homer’s arm and lead him back to his chair.
The pastor resumed his sermon.
My mind wandered to her obituary published about three days prior.
Pro 31:10 Who can find a worthy woman? For her price is far above rubies. Her motto was, no matter who did what, or how they did it, always be kind and helpful to others. You lived that; you are worthy. I found you and I married you. I will always love you. Your husband, Homer.
Just that.
A few days before Cecilia breathed her last breath, Homer text me the above verse. I was quite shocked. I did not realize she had entered the last stage of her illness. A few minutes after he text me, he phoned.
“My wife is dying…I can do nothing about it.” I felt his weight; his helplessness.
“I am so sorry Homer, so sorry.”
He repeated Proverbs 31 v 10, eventually ending the call.
Cecilia had always put her husband, home, and pet cats first. Even during the times when she was ill, her house was spotless, and her garden immaculate.
At times, he would surprise her at work and she would glow upon seeing him.
The respect and love between them were tangible.
Homer and Cecilia were one. He was a worthy husband, sitting at the gate, and she the worthy wife. Everywhere he went, he took her with him.
