We were sitting in a circle. Ten of us, in a large comfortable lounge. A diverse group, women outnumbering men.
I don’t think any of us knew each other. Strangers, but with one thing in common. Each of us was a cancer patient.
We were taking part in a therapy day and this was the ‘Mindfulness’ session. Our husbands, wives, friends or partners had been whisked off to another part of the Victorian mansion for a meeting designed to help them as our carers.
I felt nervous. This was all new to me. It looked like some of the others shared similar feelings.
Our counsellor, an attractive woman in a floaty pink dress, introduced herself.
She said, “I will be taking you on a walk through beautiful countryside. So sit back, take some deep slow breaths, close your eyes and relax.
“It is a beautiful summer day.... you are strolling through a meadow full of wild flowers... grasses swish against your ankles...butterflies dance in the sunshine ...”
Her soothing voice was already having its desired effect. I sensed everyone was beginning to unwind.
After a while we left the meadow and started to climb a hill. A gentle incline at first with low-growing heather and wild thyme at our feet. Then the way became steeper, our steps slower.
“At last you reach the top,” the pink lady continued. “You stand and gaze at the breath-taking view... a lush green valley ... knots of woodland... a river glistening in the distance. Now, turn and look up. A ruined castle on the hilltop!”
Under her directions we explored the ruins, the crumbling ramparts, the ancient smooth steps.
“Then, in one of the stone walls you find a deep recess ...there’s something inside, shining, catching the sunlight... you reach into the hole, and draw out a silver casket. You lift the lid and...”
We held our breath.
“You have reached the end of your journey. So open your eyes.”
I blinked. Everyone looked slightly dazed.
“Now,” said our guide with a smile, “I want each of you to tell me what you found inside the casket.”
Goodness! Did I really want to share what I had found?
Each person in turn gave their answer. “Beautiful jewellery.” “Precious jewels.” They all said the same thing.
My turn came.
“I found a piece of paper and written on it were the words, “I am the God who heals you.”
Some very strange looks came my way. I was certainly the odd one out.
But who knows? Maybe a small seed of hope was sown that day in a hurting heart.
This is not fiction, but a real event in my life.

You have reminded me of God's promise of "healing speedily" fulfilled at many times in life-- Isa 58:8 Then your light will break out as the morning, and your healing will appear quickly; then your righteousness shall go before you, and Yahweh’s glory will be your rear guard."
So much love and blessings!
This was one of my favs from this week.
