TITLE: The Young Couple | Previous Challenge Entry

The young man had said to his brother one day, "Doc, I am going to get married, if I have enough money to pay the preacher. I got enough money to get my license, but I haven't got enough money to pay the preacher."
Doc told him that his brother Bill was a preacher and would marry him. He said that his brother never charges people for things like that.
The young man said, "Will you ask him if he'll marry me?"
That night Doc asked Bill, and Bill replied, "If everything is alright, I'll marry him."
Doc said, "Well, yeah, I'll ask him."
Bill said, "if it is, tell him, come on down."
So that Saturday morning, the brother was there to witness the ceremony. Bill got out of bed and prepared himself for the coming of the young couple.
Bill and his brother had breakfast, and shortly after, they heard a sound of a car stopping in front of the gate. When Bill looked through the window, they saw the young couple strolling towards the front door, and Bill called out to his brother to join him.
It was an old Chevrolet car with the headlights wired on with a baling wire. Bill said to himself that the young man didn't look like a groom. His shoes were old, and his trousers were real baggy. And he had on an old moleskin jacket, and it looked like it had gone through the washing machine without being rinsed. And the little lady with a worn-out looking dress, and with no proper shoes on. She looked like she had hitchhiked from Indianapolis. She looked very young; her hair had been plaited and hung down on her back.
Bill asked her, "Are you old enough to get married?"
She said, "Yes sir. I have my written permission from my father and mother. I had to show it to the court here to get my license."
Bill said, "Aright. I have to talk to you both before I perform this wedding."
They sat down, and the young man kept looking around the room. Bill noticed that he needed a haircut badly, and he was not listening. So, Bill said, "Son, I want you to listen to what I say."
He said, "Yes sir."
Bill said to him, "Do you love this girl?"
He said, "Yes sir. I do."
Bill turned and looked at her straight in the eye and said, "Do you love him?"
"Yes sir. I do," she answered.
"Have you got a place to take her after you marry her?"
"Yes sir," the young man said confidently.
Bill asked them a few more questions, and he felt that they loved each other, and he married them.
After the wedding, Bill thought of them constantly and asked his brother where they lived. Doc told him they had lived in New Albany and gave him the address.
About a year after, Bill decided to visit the young couple to see how they were doing.
Bill had a dirty face, dirty overalls, and tools one Saturday afternoon. He slipped along like he was watching insulators cracked by lightning or something else, walked alongside the telephone wire and the electric cables along the river, and there was the old Chevrolet parked in front of the house. Bill walked up to the house close enough to listen to their conversation. The door was slightly ajar, and he peeped in. She was sitting on his lap and his pay cheque on the table in front of them. The young man told his wife about a beautiful dress he saw and wanted to buy it for her. They calculated how much for rent, groceries, etc., and he kept telling her about the dress.
She said, "But honey. I—I got a dress, and I—don't need it."
Bill was amazed at her response and walked away thinking, "What an example."
As he walked towards his vehicle, he kept praying that God would bless them and let their love for each other blossom and shine in this dark world.
