The majestic, purple headed mountains form the background. Before it stretches the lush green earth. A merciful and loving God is on one side and opposite Him, stand the arrogant and stiff-necked people of the nation of Israel. On the foreground all other nations are watching. The prophet Micah explains the picture in chapter 6. Almighty God is presenting His case against the nation of Israel, to the mountains, the judge. He is calling the earth to be His witness, the jury. The nation of Israel is the accused. The rest of nations are the spectators. The Court is in session.
Micah begins by asking Israel to present their complaint to the mountains. He then asks the mountains to hear God's case. I love the way Eugene Peterson portrays this event in his Message version of the Bible. God asks, "In what way have I wronged you? Did I not deliver you from slavery in Egypt? Don't you remember the numerous times I have heard your cry for help and come to your rescue?".
The nation of Israel responds by saying, " How can I stand before God and show proper respect to the high God? Should I bring an armload of offerings........ Would He be moved if I sacrificed my firstborn child, my precious baby, to cancel my sin?".
God's answer is quite simple, " Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don't take yourself too seriously, take God seriously". ( Message, Micah 6:3-8). The court scene ends here.
How did the nation of Israel respond ? Did they obey God? He is a just and stern God, but He is also a merciful and loving God. He pleads with them and He waits for them to turn to Him for forgiveness and repentance.
Nestling within the books of the minor prophets, Micah has a message of warning and promise that relates to our present world. The court is still in session. God is still pleading. What will our response be?

You have sketched a picture of a loving, patient, reaching for, Soverign.
Lesson to be learned and probably in all of us areas where we could face a little cross examination.
