My dad worked for the newspaper and one day, I got into my car and on the dashboard he had printed out about thirty black and white stickers with the words, “Slow Down” and “Radar.”
I ran into the house and yelled, “Dad, what have you done?”
“As long as you are on our insurance policy, you will have to keep those on your car as a reminder to slow down and not speed.”
I was mad, but I left the stickers on my car as I needed their insurance. Seeing the words, ‘Slow Down’ and ‘Radar’ glaring at me as I drove actually prompted me to obey the law more and not speed.
The day I got my own insurance policy, filled with pride, I immediately ripped the stickers off the dashboard of my car. Within a week, I had gotten another speeding ticket.
Fast forward ten years, I had repented and trusted in Jesus as my Lord and Savior. God made many changes in me, one of which was wanting to obey the traffic laws. A friend, Paige, walked into our Bible study one night and told us she recently had gotten a speeding ticket. The Lord had reminded her of Luke 16:10, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones,” that would include obeying traffic laws. My ears perked up as every once in awhile I needed a reminder to slow down.
Many years had gone by since I trusted in Christ, and I hadn’t gotten a speeding ticket in more than fifteen years. But then one year, I got two tickets within six months of each other. Not paying attention to the road signs, again, I was guilty.
When I share the Gospel, I often use my speeding tickets as an example of how we are all guilty of breaking God’s law—The Ten Commandments. Romans 3:23, says “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”And Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” NIV
Just as I stood before the judge for breaking traffic laws, I stand guilty for breaking the Ten Commandments and a payment for that sin would be needed. However, the Good News is because of the Lord’s great love for us, Jesus provided a way out when we repent and place our faith in Him as our Savior. He was the blood sacrifice that took the punishment for the sins we committed. So I don’t have to pay the penalties of my sin by going to Hell, instead I am reconciled to the Father through the Son and am forgiven.
The Lord doesn't want anyone to go to Hell, but rather Heaven. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him,” John 3:17. Yet, it's our choice to trust in Him or not while we are alive. He gives us free will.
As a follower of Jesus, when I die one day, I will spend eternity in Heaven with Him and all the other believers that trusted in Christ during their lifetime. One of the greatest benefits of knowing the Lord on earth is having the Holy Spirit as our comforter, counselor, and advocate who continually transforms our character to become more like His.
The Lord has had a lot to work on in me over the years, and I’m completely grateful for Jesus and His great mercy. I’m also glad I don’t get the speeding tickets I used to.
