I was really to old to play hide and seek, but to be a good sport and the fact that everyone, including my grandparents were going to play, I really had no choice.
Of course I drew the short straw, which meant I would be the seeker.
I walked in and hid my face on the bathroom wall. Crazy but we always did the bathroom wall so those who would be tempted to peek, couldn’t really see anything. Just trying to keep everyone honest.
I started counting to 55 ( odd number right) gives everyone more time to hide. I could hear everyone running around, then there was total silence, you could hear a pin drop. As I came out of the bathroom I didn’t hear any of the normal giggles and whisperings. Man they must really want to make this hard for me.
I looked first in the hall closet, a favorite hiding place for all of us, we could tuck ourselves behind the coats so good sometimes we wouldn’t be found, I made sure I moved all the coats, they were not going to pull that one on me. I was totally surprised not one person was in there. I headed to the other favorite hiding place in our house, under any bed that had enough room to fit , I looked under every bed and again nothing - not a soul.
Boy they are doing good today. I continued to search every place I could think of. I could not find a single person — no one was giving themselves away. Everyone seem to be as quiet as a mouse.
Not sure what happened next, but all of a sudden fear griped me, I could hardly move. My heart was racing and I was having a hard time breathing. Flashing through my mind was the lesson my youth leader had taught on Sunday night. It was about the rapture and when it happen there could be 2 standing beside each other, one would be taken and the other one would be left. This couldn’t be happening , surely I would not be left behind. I mean I did go to church every Sunday morning and to youth group every Sunday night.
Another wave of fear hit me, I thought how often I complained about having to go to church, yes more then I want to admit, and when I did go my heart wasn’t in it—but Sunday night for some reason I actually did listen.
I was getting more frighten every minute as I continued to call out every bodies name. “Come on guys somebody please answer me, this isn’t funny.” Not a sound from anywhere, actually the quietness was so extreme you could probably have heard a feather drop.
I starting sobbing and crying out, “God please help me what do I need to do, how am I suppose to go on without my family, give me another chance.” Then I told myself “ get a gripe you are letting your imagination get out of hand.”
I decided to take one more look around. I searched everywhere I could think of, still not one single person could I find. I suddenly remembered, I forgot to search the laundry room. I was praying as I rounded the corner, then a third and more intense wave of fear come over me. There was no way possible to have that many people in that little room and not hear something.
This was proving to be absolutely the worst moment of my 13 years. Maybe they all decided to get ice cream, forgetting I was still counting in the bathroom, yeah that had to be it. I turn around and headed to the garage to see if the cars were gone. Nervously I put my hand on the door knob — asking myself “what if the cars are still there”. My heart was pounding out of my chest as I opened the door- it was so dark I couldn’t see anything, I switched on the light and everyone yelled “SURPRISE Happy 13th Birthday!!”
I started to cry with joy and fell to my knees thanking God that everyone was here, that I had not been left behind. It turned out to be the best birthday of my life, because before the night ended I had given my life to Jesus, I will not be left behind, and I will never experience that awful gut wrenching fear again.
