He turns back and plows through a door that he had erected on stage, swinging blow after blow after blow with his sledgehammer. His words fly with the splinters of wood.
“Some people see a house on fire with children trapped against a window on the second floor, and they scream, completely paralyzed.”
“Some people see a house on fire with children trapped against the window, and they run to call the fire department.”
“You see children trapped on the second floor looking out of that window, and not caring for your safety - you take a sledgehammer and you plow through that door to get to those children."
I rub one of those splinters, now, eighteen years later, and I remember ….
"Thank you, Pastor Frank, for saving my people.”
My finger travels its length and I recall from somewhere that our enhanced ability to remember is what separates us from every other creature. (Rev. Dr. Scott Stoner of The Importance of Remembering, Living Compass, May 2017)
People during Bible times certainly lived to remember. Jacob erected a monument made with rocks so that the children of Israel would remember with affection their dependence on God and their thanksgiving to Him. (Genesis 31:45 KJV)
Joshua built a memorial of stones on the dry riverbed of the Jordan river where the feet of the priests stood who were bearing the ark of the covenant. He wanted the people to remember their God the moment they entered a new life. (Joshua 4:9 KJV)
We display this splinter of wood on our mantle, so that when we look at it, we gain the strength to keep helping.
The mother, for example, who was shot by the police outside our Church door. She later remembered how we took care of her, and she came inside to give her life to God.
Or the Police constable, troubled by that same memory, who came inside our Church after the mother moved away, and sought help.
Oscar Wilde said, “remembering is the diary that we all carry with us.”
But before Oscar Wilde, God said, “Then they that feared the LORD spoke often one to another: and the LORD heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon His name.” (Malachi 3:16 KJV)
I turn the splinter over, “An Open Door, Jubilee Church of God, August 15, 2004” and I remember.
