“You need bladder pads?” I repeat, irritated that I’m talking to this woman again so soon.
I shoulder the receiver and call to my husband who is heading out the front door. “Here’s the address.”
He juggles the paper along with the cake I just baked and crosses the street to a recently widowed neighbor, all the while talking on our Church’s mobile phone.
“This is Constable Brown from the Police,” the home phone rings again. “Would your Church pay the $300 cab fare this man needs to go to his home reservation? We have him in the cruiser. He’s freezing out here on the street, and the Greyhound doesn’t come by for hours.”
We sit in the middle of swirling problems, but we breathe in peace because we know the Author.
“The Bible says that You can speak to your twisted stomach – your mountain - in the name of Jesus, and it will recover,” I encourage a woman when the home phone rings again.
“There’s water coming through the ceiling?” my husband repeats as he grips the Church mobile and spins on his heel back out the front door, clutching a fresh cup of coffee I handed him.
“We live in the eye of a storm,” we collapse later onto the couch. “A storm of addiction, homelessness, no hope,” I count on my fingers.
“But Jesus is the eye,” we smile, “and we are His apple.”
