We sat watching tv in our living room that evening, nothing special going on
just our normal after dinner routine. We could see our neighbors through our window, which seemed to be only a arms length away. They were having almost an identical evening. We could almost have been looking in a mirror instead of each other’s windows. That’s the way life is when you live in a mobile home park. Up close and personal to your neighbors.
My husband got up to go shower and on his way to the bathroom he walked over to close the living room curtains. We laughed as we looked over and saw our neighbors were also closing their curtains, we all smiled and did our goodnight wave which had become a nightly routine.
This particular evening was very cold and most of us heated with gas. You could hear the gas furnaces all over the park continually coming on and off. It was very loud and annoying but life was what it was and we were all thankful to have our warm homes as we settled in for the evening.
But what happened next took us all by surprise. I heard a very loud boom, unlike the sound of your normal furnace coming on. I walked over to take a look out the window and could not believe my eyes. Our neighbors home, the ones whom we had just waved goodnight to; was on fire.
I rushed to the bathroom to tell my husband what was going on, then I called 911, grabbed my house coat and ran out the door. Others neighbors had come out as well. I started screaming frantically, we have to get them out I just saw them in there a few minutes ago. By this time my husband had come out and him and a neighbor across the street were heading into the burning home.
They had not been in there very long when the firefighters arrived, they joined my husband and neighbor in the search for our friends as the flames were getting worse. The whole neighborhood had gathered outside, praying they would find our friends before the fire got worst. It didn’t take very long for the men to come out, they were exhausted from the smoke and reported that no one was in there. A few minutes after tall the men had gotten out, there was another boom and the whole trailer went up in flames.
We were worried that we could not figure out where our friends could be, we had just seen them in their living room not 10 minutes before the fire started.
As the firemen were packing their things to leave, having gotten the fire out, our friends came walking down the road; they seemed to be in shock as they saw that their home was nothing more them smelting ash.
They said they had decided to take a walk to enjoy the crisp winter air. If they had not taken that walk they may have been trapped in that fire and not been able to get out. Even through they lost their home that night they were so thankful they had escaped what could have been an even worst fate.
The next morning as I sat having my coffee and reading my Bible, I glanced over at what was left of last nights awful fire. I felt strongly that God immediately showed me that as desperate as I was to make sure my friends were out of that fire last night, I needed to feel that same urgency to witness to everyone I could, to save them from a fate that would be even worst.
It was a night I will never forget and a message from God I pray I will always remember.
