The Girl From Cotton Lane comes to mind. What was she up to…, furthermore, who was she, other than the ‘girl from Cotton Lane’? Here, the author takes you to the early 1900’s, when work was plentiful, then suddenly, scarce. Through it all, including the death of her husband, she built an empire. It was during a time when women were ‘second-class’ citizens, thus not respected let alone being recognized and accepted as a businessperson. Although it might be fiction, or some parts were, it could be the life story of any of us building a future. It reminded me of Brave Women and Immaculate and Powerful, subtitle: The Female In Sacred Image and Social Reality. And to mention but a few of the women of the Old Testament Hannah, Jael, Judith, Ruth and so on.
Then comes to mind the book Table in the Wilderness, I read years ago. A narration of what happened to Joseph, of the Old Testament after his brothers sold him to Sargon. The first two chapters are a brief repeat of the Biblical version. Chapter three onwards is the story of what happened whilst traveling to Egypt. Joseph’s life was full of adventure. Once in Egypt, on market day he was ‘auctioned’; his great physique and probably his good looks fetched the highest price. He was sold to the highest bidder, the House of Pharaoh. As I remembered, and reread some parts, it dawned on me the very apt title of the book. Although, we might feel, through circumstances, as if we are in the wilderness, God will always prepare a table.
I noticed in my bookshelf, Sybil, Dibs, The Lost Boy and A Child Called It and immediately I was thinking of Care of the Soul, and Emotional Problems Of Living subtitle Avoiding The Neurotic Pattern.
As I briefly dwelled on the books I have read, others comes to mind such as How To Be A Lady, The Lonely and Hurricane, a fighter plane served during WWII.
When I page through my book The Scented Garden, I realized yet again, deep inside of me God’s greatness and love for his Creations.
At times, I pick up my Lessons In Truth; to remind myself of how great God is and his sincere unconditional love for us.
I reread Learning to Die as a reminder to not forget to live. In Whispers From Eternity it is clear the wisdom God so desperately wants to teach all of us, if only we will Relax, We Are Just Visiting This Planet, and should Be Informed Before Leaving Earth – reading our Bible paying attention to every word.
When Jesus was crucified, there were moments of Behold the Earth Mourns.
Content in the mentioned books differs greatly. I take my hat off to the parents of the authors, the authors themselves especially when they did their own research. They are the heroes who remained with the plan, the heroes who stayed focused. The heroes who spend hours and hours in research and those who adhered to God’s message, to bring to you and me entertainment, comfort, food-for-thought, insight and knowledge.
Soon I will start reading The Daisies of Nazareth.
