The first day of registration was to begin on Monday at 10 am. My wife predicted there would be long lines waiting to register and so we should get there early to minimize the wait. We were there at 9:30. You probably guessed it! We were the first ones there. They gave us new shirts with their logo and had our picture taken which appeared on our city’s webpage.
I really didn’t know what to expect for the first class, but when the teacher showed up, I was a little worried. She couldn’t have been an ounce over 110# and as limber as a wet spaghetti noodle. She started by telling us to march in place. Then she said to lift our legs higher. That’s right: higher. “Now touch your elbow to your opposite knee, as you march” she commanded. “I’m sorry! I’m not that flexible!” I retorted. She thought I was kidding.
The next routine was to tap our right foot behind our left foot while doing something with our arms. This exercise was to develop coordination and balance. At this point I realized that I had two more challenges than just flexibility!
(It suddenly dawned on me why I didn’t do well in Square Dance lessons.)
Shortly after that, the new Y was closed for the Corona Virus. When it reopened, I was in the first class. One thing was different. The skinny teacher was no where to be seen. I was relieved to see that the new teacher was closer to my size. (The key word is “closer”.)
However, she could not only march and do things at the same time with her hands, but she could also sing and give commands at the same time. For that I truly admired her!
At the end of her class, she introduced us to a “stretching session”. It went like this. While seated you put your right ankle on your left knee, then pull your right ankle as close as you can to your body…without falling off of the chair! I thought the stretching session would evolve into a breaking session. We did similar activities with all of our limbs.
While I wasn’t singing in class, I was singing on the way to the car.
Later I turned on the TV and some of the ads took on a whole new meaning. There is a product called Stephan which has proteins supported by vitamins, minerals and other stuff which helps your joints and soft tissue. I’m sure that is what I was missing!
The next product was Glucosamine which claims to be essential for building tendons, ligaments and cartilage. I have since acquired some of this through my senior insurance policy. If I had this before I started my regiment, it would probably have helped.
Someone (not me) typed into the computer search engine, “Is there a pill for flexibility?” The answer was “No, but you can try some herbs that might help.” I wasn’t ready for all of that. I was having enough trouble with what I already knew.
The best advise that I can give for flexibility is to 1) push yourself away from the dinner table, 2) join the YMCA, and 3) don’t complain. I have to admit that the program is helping, but I have a long way to go.
