“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” is echoing through time. The Bridegroom is coming with His entourage for His bride.
The preparations for the wedding of Christ to His Bride, the Church have been ongoing from the beginning of time. A divine romance, a never-ending proposal, and a glorious wedding are the reverberations of the love of God for the world.
When a proposal of marriage was made in Galilee, the father of the groom would negotiate the price with the father of the bride. Upon completed negotiations, the groom would take a cup of wine and offer it to the woman he was to marry. This was symbolic of the sacrifice he was willing to make for her; he would give his life for her. Then, the man would go back to his home to prepare a place for his bride. Tirelessly working to build rooms above his father’s house, he anxiously waited until the appointed time when his father would approve of his going to bring his bride home forever.
In the days of old, the Father negotiated the price of the Bride. He set a date for the wedding, and the Son prepared for the ultimate proposal and subsequent wedding to His Bride, the Church. God negotiated the highest price for the Bride; the Groom’s very life would have to be given up for her. The offer was made immediately; there was no time to waste. The Bridegroom took the wine and shared it with His Bride, seen in the Gospels with the disciples at the last supper. He set out to propose marriage, and in the process was beaten black and blue. The proposal was made by His death on the cross for the sins of the world. It was an extravagant display of love which still stands today. He was buried in a borrowed tomb but only stayed for three days. He rose again in magnificent splendor and ascended into Heaven where He lives with His Father, preparing a new place for His Bride, awaiting the Wedding day.
“In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:2-3, KJV)
He covered it all; something old (the world, the old covenant), something new (new covenant, new place), something borrowed (borrowed grave), and something blue (“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities,…” – Isaiah 53:5a).
He is coming again at the appointed time, and until that blessed day, true love waits in joyful anticipation. The love of old still pulses through the modern time. It has not diminished, the proposal has not been rescinded, the Groom will still come.
