Moved from Disappointment to Encouragement

My eyes fell on this week’s writing challenge topic, which was to be my first after finding and joining FaithWriters. I read, “Music”, and silently groaned.

For a beginning writer like myself, and being musically ignorant too, I could only think, “No way can I submit an entry for this topic!” I then disappointedly decided to distract myself by checking out one of my social media accounts.

But fate (or was it God?) must have seen what was happening differently.

Literally the first thing I saw after clicking open the tab was a post where the words, “music typewriter”, jumped out at me. Now that was a surprise! Coincidental? I had to take a second look to see if I saw it right, for to my knowledge I had never heard of such a thing. That did it. My natural curiosity kicked in and I just had to find out more about this new-to-me device.

And there it was. My internet search revealed there was indeed such a thing. I discovered they were developed in the 19th Century, and some of the earlier models intrigued me the most; in a way they resembled well-designed musical instruments! Later models looked very much like the average typewriter.

They might have looked like a common typewriter, but that first strike of any key showed they were not. Instead of each key strike producing a specific letter, they instead printed out specific musical notes, staff and all. A musician or song writer then had print quality music that was ready to be reproduced as soon as they removed it from their very useful music typewriter.
What an amazing invention that was! And to think I had never known about them.

With the invention of computers and printers, sadly most were probably consigned to scrap piles. But thankfully we had some forward-thinking people who saved a few of the more unique and popular ones so future generations like ours could still see them on display in museums, and enjoyed by private collectors.

Do you want to see what some of them looked like without going to a museum? They’re easy to find on the internet. Just type in something like, “What is a music typewriter?” into your favorite search engine, then start browsing to enjoy yourself.

And here I thought I wouldn’t be able to write about music….

I feel encouraged.

The hook at the beginning of your piece was effective. And the clincher at the end of your piece proved your point. All in all, you did a fine job!

That's so cool --I'd never heard of it before. For your amusement, there is a classical music piece that uses a typewriter as an instrument. It's called "The Typewriter. " Check it out- so fun!

I love when I learn things, and I certainly learned something here! And based on that alone should warrant "points" about this topic! Then, put together how well this flowed and how on topic you were, and it is a "no brainer" --- it was well done!
