“Dear Lord,” I thought “maybe he did not hear me.”
The thought I had expressed had been in my heart with such burning intensity for so long. I had spoken it to my mirror often and today I said it out loud.
“I love him” it was my frequent thought. We had been friends since childhood.
Time had passed. There had been middle and high school, college and career years and always we remained good friends.
My beloved Josiah went to Iraq and I became a prayer warrior. I wrote to him frequently. He was a quiet, clever man and we often read each other’s thoughts.
On the day I spoke he was on leave from the army, so I assumed that he may have missed me and thought of me while away from me.
The words I said were “Josiah, marry me.”
When I finally had the courage to open my embarrassed eyes, he was kneeling down before me. He had reached into his jacket pocket and produced a beautiful sparkling diamond ring in a bright blue box.
I held my breath in excitement and my joyful heart leapt in my chest.
“I will.” he said with fervour.
“I was too shy to ask before. I truly love you, my darling Jean. Not only are you my best friend but you are the true joy of my heart and I have loved you all my life.”
Fifteen years later I am recalling this beginning of the new era, in which we got married and had children. We are blissfully happy. We remain best friends, prayer and worship partners and hardly ever quarrel.
‘A match made in heaven;’ you may say.
My daily prayer is “Dear Father. I thank you for this man, this friend and this soldier at my side. Help me always to be for him a helper, supporter, lover, wife and sister in the Lord.”
