Topic: FAMILY (01/21/16)
Dementia Diary.
“I don’t understand what you do about the seeds.”
It’s a confusing comment from my husband.
“How do you get the seeds into the bird?”
“Well normally,” I reply, “they manage to feed themselves.”
“But I don’t understand. How do they get the seeds in?”
“I guess if they’re babies, then the mother feeds them by putting the seed from her beak into theirs.”
“Oh!”
Silence for a while. Perhaps he’s dozing.
Then the question comes again. “I don’t understand how the bird gets the seed.”
“Tell me about the bird,” I say.
“Well it’s not a bird exactly. It’s sort of made from a sort of joystick!”
I went to a meeting today. It was a Carers’ meeting, where we all support each other and have the chance to share, sympathise, consult and advise. We’re like a family really, all with our own ideas and options; our differences and similarities. A biological family is united through their genes, but we are united by our needs. They are needs to be understood, particularly in our weaknesses. Sometimes the fruit of the Spirit seems in short supply, and the Heavenly Gardener is busy pruning our lives so the fruit may grow in us.
When dissensions and fits of rage happen, we can rely on the promise of God that He will never leave us or forsake us, so those who have confessed their faith in Jesus are not lost. He holds us on strong elastic. We are all equipped for the road He has set for us, and though sometimes our weaknesses surface, I thank God that we have the victory in Jesus.
“How am I supposed to fit this thing?” he asks.
“What are you trying to fit, dear?”
“I just want to know what to do about the Fire Extinguisher!” and he looks so confused when I don’t hear or understand.
Galatians 5:22,23. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self- control.
Philippians 4:6,7. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Proverbs 18:24b ...there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Sometimes he gets cross, as happens in families, but that is when the fruit is ripening. It is also when we can turn to each other.

It's a difficult journey when living with or caring for someone with dementia...it can be frustrating, draining and sad.

You have great patience from the Spirit, and He will continue to guide you.
(It sounds authentic, so I'm assuming this is a true account)

You have quoted the scriptures that will certainly under gird and strengthen the carer of one with dementia. I like the image that says 'God holds us on strong elastic.' Thanks for writing this very realistic article.

sad story of an all too familiar reality to many folks. Your dialogue had a lot of restraint and compassion rolled into one. Nice job.

It is hard to see someone we love lose their memories of even important people in their life.
