The western portion of Washington State is blessed with a lot of rain. The eastern side of the State, separated from the West Side by the Cascade Mountain range, is desert. If it were not for the Grand Coulee Dam and the irrigation system fed by it and other reservoirs, most of Eastern Washington would be unproductive desert. This year the snow packs in the mountains that feeds the irrigation systems were virtually non-existent. Though residents of Eastern Washington generally are unappreciative of rain, this year we came to feel differently about it. We loved every drop of rain that we received.
Rain can cause a lot of problems when we have too much also. Complete areas are under water due to storms and too much rain. In our valley, rain during the cherry harvest can ruin a whole crop. Likewise, the writer of Proverbs likens rain at the wrong time to honor given to a fool. Rain at the right time, however, is pleasant and refreshing, causing plants to grow, and rivers to be renewed. “Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving. Sing praises on the harp to our God, Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.” (Psalms 147:7-8)
The Psalmist says that God will rain coals upon the wicked, and to the disobedient He gave hail for rain. But for the righteous Solomon rejoices, “His favor is like the cloud of the latter rain.” The Apostle Paul joins, “He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”
God rains down blessing upon His people, seasons of refreshing. “And try Me now in this, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.” (Malachi 3:10)
