Jack turned away from her in disgust as he headed for the front door – something he did every time things got difficult between them. They had only been married three years, but to Jack it seemed like an eternity. Everything he was, everything he did was wrong according to Michelle. He wondered why she married him in the first place.
Michelle watched Jack head for the door in his usual say nothing pouty mode and it enraged her, so she gave into her anger tossing a pillow at him and hitting him in the back of the head.
Jack turned around slowly, anger and hurt written all over his face.
“That’s right, Jack, leave when things are going rough, that’s what you always do, what ever happened to our vows, you know – for better or for worse?” Michelle sneered.
Now Jack came toward Michelle with a vengeance, shaking his fist in the air as he spoke, “I meant my vows, but you always find a way to demean and mistrust me. You belittle me in front of company, and you accuse me of cheating on you when I’m out with the guys.”
“Oh, that’s right, it’s all my fault. It couldn’t be that you work late hours and then on the weekends you either zone out with football or go play pool with the boys.” Michelle’s voice trembled as she wiped a tear from her eye.
“Look, Michelle, I never said it was all your fault, but everything I say or do is wrong to you. I’m not loving enough, don’t provide enough, know what you need etc. etc.” Now Jack’s voice cracked as he continued, “I just don’t know what to do anymore, I’ve tried and you can’t deny it. The Valentine’s Day trip to St. Thomas didn’t suit you, you said the hotel was cheap.”
“Well, it was!” Michelle’s nostrils flared.
Jack went to hold Michelle, but she pulled away. Tears ran freely now down Jack’s face, “It was all I could afford.”
Jack walked away, this time in a hurry, his posture hunched over like a wounded animal. He turned as he exited the door, “Goodbye, Michelle. I hope you have a nice life.”
Michelle stood with her mouth wide open; she never thought he’d be the type to leave her. Maybe she had been too harsh, but her pride wouldn’t let her apologize and so she watched Jack disappear into the night.
The telephone rang in the early morning hours – it was the police. Jack’s car spun off the road down by the old saw mill, apparently the rain was pouring down so hard he misjudged and slid off an embankment. Jack died instantly.
Michelle quivered as she held the telephone to her ear listening to the sorted details of her husband’s demise. She glanced at the clock radio that showed today’s date, it was August 10th – their 4th anniversary.
Suddenly Michelle felt sick to her stomach, what happened after that, she cannot recall – all she knew was her life had been altered forever.

Moral of this story, as I perceive it, relates to Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen
A friend of mine died 9 years ago - and this is almost a verbatim of what happened to him, car crash, died upon impact. The wife called me crying - and her whole life was changed, all she could remember was her harsh words to him as he stormed out the door. Sad.
Good story, because not all stories have a "happy ending." But with Christ in our lives - we can get through ANYTHING.
God Bless~
Good writing!
