Grass fires occur annually in many parts of California. An interesting phenomena ensues as a result of some of these fires. After the burning has spent its rage, the only remains are charred trees and the blackened ash of what used to be golden grasses. For months the hills remain barren and unproductive, but with the first rains in the fall, something interesting begins to happen.

God has created a special flower in some parts of California, that only germinates every forty or fifty years and only after a fire. The seeds, implanted in the ground, remain dormant for years until a fire somehow stirs them to grow. The unique flowers that result are worth the wait as they burst forth in a splash of brilliant orange. Against the blackened landscape, they present a magnificent tribute to the glory of God.

As I pondered these beautiful flowers one day, God spoke a spiritual lesson to me. Sometimes God allows us to endure a trial or fiery ordeal that burns many things out of us. At the time we may feel charred and barren, but God never stops there. His purpose is always to bring out the beauty. We may have hidden areas of beauty that have been dormant for forty or fifty years, just like the flower.

As a fiery test chafes at our character, burning out impurities, we can know that God plans to draw out a brilliant, orange flower in the end. With a backdrop of soot and ashes, His reflection shines all the more brightly. Some of God's most inwardly beautiful and sensitive people are those who have been tested by fire. The radiance of Christ is evident on their countenance.
