Layona Suyana was 39 years old and lived in a one bedroom house above a shop in East Jakarta,Indonesia. Her husband was crippled after a motorcycle accident and unable to work. Her teenage twins, Yono and Ahn, went to the state school two bus transfers away. Their house had rats.
The Bowens attended Briarwood Community Church where everyone dressed nicely and there were a lot of activities for the youth. Briarwood sat on a hill with commanding views and flags of the nations lined both sides of the driveway. The church had a separate Prayer Chapel equipped with every modern convenience and was surrounded by flowers and a man made pond. A huge digital sign faced the freeway and listed the service times in addition to having clever announcements that could be changed daily.
The Suyanas attended Church of Love where everyone wore their best, and some only had one good outfit. There were lots of ministering opportunities for the youth. Church of Love looked like any other little storefront, it was safer that way. They prayed in the sanctuary. There was no landscaping and no running water or air conditioning. The walls of the building had big doors on the front and back that could be opened up to let the flood waters flow through during the rainy season. The last church had suffered a bombing so there was no sign and the only way to give information to people was to tell them personally.
Jan Bowen worried about her husband's pension fund, the decline of the real estate market and whether the children would be accepted into good collages. They would not go on vacation this year. She canceled their country club membership and quit having her nails done. She thought she was sacrificing.
Layona Suyana was worried because she didn't have the money to fill prescriptions for her husband and that the man she worked for at the market would find out she was Christian and let her go. She prayed that the boys wouldn't be influenced by the radical doctrines of the state school. She sold her bicycle and stopped buying fried rice from the street venders.
Jan Bowen took medication for depression. She loved her family, her country and her church. She thanked God every day because they were getting by.
Layona Suyana was happy. She loved her family, her country and her church. She thanked God every day, she thought she was a blessed woman.
