This chorus along with the rest of the lyrics in the song, “Postcards from Heaven;” by Lighthouse Family reminds us to remember what we have before it is gone. The idea of receiving postcards from loved ones who have passed on to be with our Lord is a wonderful thought. Even though receiving a note saying, “Made it here with no problems, wish you were here and see you real soon,” is a special way to hear from those we’ve lost, let’s imagine, for a minute, a postcard from Hell. “Warning!” “Change your ways now! Take the narrow path; wish you will never come here!” The unbelievers need this message more than Christians need the other one. We know our fellow believers are with our Lord for eternity; but what about our unsaved loved ones: family, neighbors and friends? How do we get the message to them?
In the Gospel of Luke 16:19-31, (The Quest Study Bible, NIV) you will find the parable of “The Rich Man and Lazarus” where the rich man had ignored poor Lazarus’s cries for help as he begged by his gates. Then, the two men passed away at the same time and the rich man looked up to see Lazarus with Abraham in Heaven. He pleaded to Abraham to send Lazarus to his father’s house, so that Lazarus could warn his five brothers to repent. Sadly, Abraham told him that if his brothers did not listen to Moses or the prophets of the past, then, they would surely not even listen to someone who rises from the dead. Instead of Lazarus appearing to them, would his brothers have accepted a message from their sibling? Would a postcard from Hell really work? Probably not! Just as Abraham informed the rich man, if hearing the Word isn’t enough, messages from the dead will not work either. Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character in “A Christmas Carol,” didn’t even accept the message from Jacob Marley, his greedy business partner, who appeared to him as a ghost. Scrooge needed more proof and prompting from the spirits of the past, present and future before believing he needed to change his ways.
Although the beleaguered souls do not have the ability to send postcards from Hell; we, just like the words in the song, “know where we are from.” With this knowledge comes responsibility and we have the means to witness and save souls for Christ. Just by simply placing a $.23 stamp on a postcard, even snail mail is a way to share the Good News. Consequently, if we do nothing we may be seeing, “Tears from Heaven.”
