It arrives more often than not, a whining little demon protesting its inconvenience and discomfort. Its will has been frustrated and it is quite unhappy and is unable to focus on anything or anyone else other than its own unhappiness. It seldom sees itself as having any responsibility for its discomfort other than an occasional orgy of self loathing followed by equally indulgent bouts of blaming. It is astute enough to know it is not popular and sufficiently clever in disguising itself as benign discernment. It is most patient and has a highly developed sense of timing. It is able to snare the innocent as well as the guilty without prejudice and has learned to cover it tracts before one realizes it has struck.
It prides itself in its independence, vowing to serve no master other than itself. It avoids overexposure by cloaking itself in counterfeit confession and superficial serenity and can disarm the fiercest of warriors with convincing humility. But its greatest power lay in its ability to convince its host that it is, thought quite demanding a parasite, absolutely necessary for survival, that they are “in this together” for better or worse.
It is another spin of the tale began in the Garden, a deception based on the willingness to be deceived and the misdirection of the greatest purpose of free will … To return sweet love. I pray that the evil of this lie and my culpability in it may serve as fuel for a more righteous anger that serves the Master for His good purposes.
