I continued to lay there, motionless, faint and unable to speak. I could not see a thing. I was engulfed in darkness; not any darkness but a thick and heavy darkness that would not wane. Each precious breath was a challenge, for I did not know if it would be my last.
What would be my fate? My thoughts began to overtake me: is there a way out? Is this my end? Oh God help me! I thought again. Could He hear my thoughts? Would He accept my plea? Must I speak, no, I did not dare.
One day, two days, three days had passed. Although, I did not know for sure. The sun was gone, the moon was no more. I longed to see just a glimpse of the stars, and yet they did not show. My bones began to rattle. My skin was so numb. The smell was growing strong. I began to ponder, if I did not die from the lack of air, it would certainly be from the smell of the air. I needed to move. Should I turn? Could I turn? The walls seemed to close in around me. The space seemed to be getting tighter. My clothes were drenched and I was surrounded by some sort of weeds.
I couldn’t take it any longer. I needed deliverance; I needed light! No man could help me now; only God could rescue me. I began to cry out: “Help me oh God…!” I continued to lie there. The darkness still surrounded me; the smell still engulfed my every breath; the walls still enclosed me. Just then…when I thought all hope was gone, I heard an awful noise; one that no one should ever here. What was happening? The water around me began to swish; the beast’s mouth began to open. The light flooded my eyes. The sun became my friend. I found myself on dry ground. The darkness no longer embraced me as the light flooded my soul. He did hear my prayer “ I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. (Jonah 2:2) NIV
