Just too many mem'ries and too many tears.
I snuck to the attic when the time was right,
To be by myself on this Christmas Eve night.
Some forgotten boxes on the old dusty floor,
A three legged stool was propped next to the door.
An hour later when I had sure seen enough,
I spotted a box labeled, 'Old Christmas stuff.'
Old fashioned stringed bulbs, with the paint chipped away,
A jolly Saint Nick in an old wooden sleigh.
I held my old stocking as memories rushed in,
The sock seemed much bigger to me way back then.
My mind took me back to some decades before,
To that Christmas Eve of the year sixty four.
My dear sweet old grandma had come for the night,
She brought in some gifts; all were wrapped up real tight.
I'd opened my present with such tender care,
Most eager to find what was hidden in there.
Hard ribbon candy filled a brown paper sack,
An orange and an apple and walnuts to crack.
I found wrapped in green, a huge white popcorn ball,
And tucked in a box was a new dime store doll.
I smiled to myself as I came back to now,
Remembering gifts that were cheapest somehow.
I took down the box with a smile on my face,
The pain from my past, it was time to erase.
