TITLE: Bobby Finds A Friend | Previous Challenge Entry

“What do you think your doing!,” Sadie scolded.
“I’m just having fun,” explained Bobby.
“You think that just because you are a bobcat, you can go around picking on everybody. I saw you trying to juggle Mrs. Robin’s eggs, I’ve never seen her so upset. I can’t imagine what would happen if you broke one of her eggs.” Sadie said angrily. “ It’s no wonder that you don’t have any friends and nobody wants to play with you. You don’t know how to be a friend.”
“That’s not true, I have all the friends I could ever want.” Bobby told her.
“That’s what you think,” Sadie told him as she scurried up a tree.
Bobby walked away wondering if what Sadie said was true. He came across the fox twins, Freddie and Fauna. ”I’ll bet they will play with me, they are my friends.”
“Hey, come play with me,” ordered Bobby.
The foxes stopped playing and replied, “We can’t we have to go home now, our mom is calling.”
As the foxes walked away, he began to think that Sadie might be right
Bobby spent the rest of the afternoon looking for someone to play with, but time and time again the answer was the same, a big fat, “NO”.
The day began to turn to night and Bobby looked around and realized he didn’t know which way was home. Nothing looked right, he didn’t know where he was. He began to cry, “mother, mother where are you?” There was no answer.
As it became darker and darker, Bobby became more and more afraid. He sat beneath a tree and began to cry. He began to worry that he would be lost forever and no one would ever find him.
Bobby did not know that someone had been watching him. In the trees far above him sat Mr. Oakley, the wisest owl in the whole forest. Mr. Oakley had been watching Bobby most of the day and realized that he was having some problems. He thought that Bobby could use some advise and this might be the perfect time to give it to him.
“What are you doing so far from home?” asked Mr. Oakley,
“ and I was looking for someone to play with and no one would play with me and while I was looking I got lost,” Bobby cried.
“It sounds to me like you have two problems,” replied Mr. Oakley. “Number one, you’re lost and number two you don’t have any friends.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” Bobby said meekly.
“Well, I think I can help you with both,” Mr. Oakley told him reassuringly. “Let me show you the way home first, you mother is probably worried.”
Happily Bobby was shown the way home and very relieved to be there after such a hard day. After giving his mother a big hug, he sat down to have a long talk with Mr. Oakley.
From under Mr. Oakley’s wing, he pulled out a book, HOW TO BE A GOOD FRIEND. Bobby sat quietly listening to every word that Mr. Oakley read to him. Bobby had finally realized that he wasn’t a very good friend.
Mr. Oakley began to read from the book, “ Friends are very wonderful to have. You can find a friend now and keep them the rest of your life. But, you have to remember if you are going to keep a friend you have to be a good friend. You have to be kind to your friends because you want your friends to be kind to you. You have to be able to share with your friends because your friends are more important than anything else you have.”
Bobby listened carefully to every word that Mr. Oakley read to him and the next day he decided to put what he learned into practice. He saw Sadie scampering down the path and she stopped when she saw him and started to run the other way.
“Stop, Sadie,” Bobby yelled. “I’m sorry, I’ve been a pain, can you forgive me?”
“I guess I can try,” Sadie said reluctantly, and the two ran off to play.
From that day on Bobby was a very good friend to everyone and they were good friends to him. But, his very best friend was Mr. Oakley for teaching him something he’ll never forget.
