The Choice

Recently I had surgery which lead to chronic pain. When I returned to see the surgeon he was totally without compassion and was, indeed, quite harsh with me. His nurse stood beside him and remained silent. By the time the doctor walked out I was in tears. The moment the nurse was alone with me he demonstrated such care and tenderness. His words completely changed the situation and I went home and instantly wrote him a story to let him know how much his concern had helped. Here is the story I sent him.


It all started one night long ago. There were two little boys who lived in the same village. Neither boy knew the other as they lived on opposite ends of the village.

It seemed a normal night until. . .suddenly each boy noticed a bright light outside his window. Curiosity drew each to discover the source of this light. Each felt the warmth of the light and it seemed to draw closer until, in each child’s mind, the light stopped right outside his window. There was no sense of fear, but of wonderment.

From within the light a voice beyond description was heard speaking, as if directly to that particular child, though each child was hearing the same message.

The glowing light announced that it had been given two gifts and that it could offer one, and only one of the two gifts to someone, but that, if the person received one of the gifts he could never have access to the other gift.

The light explained that many people had both of these gifts and that they could refuse both gifts and hope that they might receive them some other way. But only by rejecting one of the gifts could the boy be guaranteed the other gift would be given to him.

THE OFFER:

Gift 1: You will have a successful career as a surgeon. You will be able to heal many people with your scalpel. You will be prosperous and belong to the private clubs where you will enjoy the camaraderie of colleagues. but you will not possess gift 2.

Gift 2: You will be given a heart of compassion. You will be able to help bring healing to many people with your gift. You will not be a doctor, nor belong to any country clubs nor have great wealth. But you will be sent hurting people and you will pour the oil of kindness over them and they will be changed. Your words will soften the rugged edges of this world. These people will be blessed by coming in contact with you during a time when they are most vulnerable; wounded people. For there is a pain greater than the body can produce.

Each boy made a different choice. And it came to pass just as they had been told. Which one do you think, chose the better?

I love this! I'm sorry for your difficult experience, and glad that you found a compassionate professional. My son-in-law is studying to be a nurse, and I found it refreshing that you wrote about a male nurse. In my experience, they are awesome!

I really liked the fable; you did a great job there.

This story really intrigued me. I loved the format of the story within a story and how the allegory applied to the actual situation. Very creative, as well as having a beautiful message!
