TITLE: The Hole in my Heart | Previous Challenge Entry

It has been said that everyone has a God-sized hole in their heart, that only He can fill. When we recognize this longing, put our faith in Him, and spend time at His feet and in His arms, we feel satisfied and full – lacking nothing. We are content. (Psalm 131:2 NKJV)
In teaching children, I have used an object lesson to illustrate this “hole in our heart”. I make a large heart out of cardboard with a circle cut out in the center. Then I cut out various other shapes such as a square, rectangle, oval, etc. While teaching the lesson, I invite kids to come up and try the different shapes to see which one fits the hole. As they are working on this task, I share with them the different things these other shapes might represent – friends, money, stuff, and popularity. Oftentimes the kids will share some additional ideas. But soon they realize, none of these shapes fit just right. Some are close, but they don’t fill the hole completely. We talk about how none of these things are bad, but they just can’t take the place of God in our lives. Then I bring out the circle and show them how when we put God in His proper place, it makes us complete, and we can fully enjoy all the other things. (Matt. 6:33) But as long as the hole is still there, we will feel emptiness inside.
As adults, we sometimes face this same predicament. We chase the wrong things trying to fill the void inside, but all along, there is really only ONE thing that can truly satisfy – and that is Jesus. Without Him in His proper place in our hearts, we will only feel emptiness.
You can have everything you need and want – everything in this world you desire…but if you don’t have JESUS, you are completely poor! Alternatively, you can have absolutely nothing you need or want – nothing in this world you desire…but if you have JESUS, you have EVERYTHING!
