I lived in a small room with an adjoining bathroom. The food in my cupboard consisted of lentils, rice, onions, carrots, coffee, sugar, cinnamon, and milk. I didn’t have a refrigerator. This was my diet for almost two weeks. I dreamed of eating a golden brown, crusty, butter croissant for breakfast.
God had called me here and I had obeyed. He was teaching me to live by faith and I knew this would be another opportunity to trust Him to provide for my needs. I had His peace about the situation.
It was 7:30 a.m. when I left the house for school. I had to walk across a prairie to get to the bus stop. There was a main road with a lot of traffic, and a smaller road further to the right where there was very little. I crossed over to the smaller road, all the while worrying about the future and dreaming of a croissant.
Shortly after, I heard a car approaching from behind me. It began to slow down, and then stopped beside me. A middle-aged, blond-haired man with a big, friendly smile stepped out of the car.
“Bonjour Madame,” he said in delightful, charming French.
“Bonjour Monsieur,” I replied in French.
He walked to the back of his car and opened the trunk. To my utter amazement it was full of croissants.
He took one from a box and held it out to me. “Madame, this is for you.”
“I…I can’t pay you for it.”
“It’s a gift.”
I accepted it gratefully. “Thank you, Monsieur.”
“You’re welcome.” Still smiling he hopped into his car and drove away.
I was dumbfounded. God had sent this man to bring me a croissant. “Thank you, Lord. Thank you for this croissant.” I savored it, chewing slowly.
A few days later I received word that the menacing obstacle had been removed, and the money had been wired to a bank near me.
“Thank you, Lord, for coming through for me once again. Thank you for your suffering on the cross for my sins so that I could be born again and have a personal relationship with you. Thank you for the deeper intimacy I now have with you because of this trial that I’ve endured.”
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Rom. 8:28 NKJ
