“See that guy over there, the hot one near the guitarist?”
“Yeah”
“He said that I was like, amazing.”
“No way.”
“And then he said that I could belong to Jesus.”
“Eeerrrgh.”
“I know, right. And he’s cute too, but he was just wording me up. I thought he really liked me and everything.”
“Sorry, Jess.”
“So, I just walked away and let him see what he was missing out on if you know what I mean.”
“Good one.”
“I’m over this, let’s find some real entertainment.”
“The pub?”
“Yeah.”
When I do manage to get someone to stop and talk, it never works. Some smile and nod, others stand and listen for a while before they make an excuse. A few, well, they’re just so rude. I don’t know if I can take it anymore.
“As if I’m going to let that upstart tell me what I need. The cheek of him, suggesting that I accept this Jesus business.”
“Oh, I agree. The city square, clogged up with all this carry-on, how are decent people supposed to get their shopping done? I’m going to write to the council and complain.”
“I’ll sign it too, that’ll carry some weight. What is it with young people and those dreadlock things? I refuse to entertain the idea that a shaggy, ill-mannered boy could know anything about life, or me.”
“The last time I wrote to the council, they didn’t even respond. I’ll use exclamation marks this time. They won’t be able to ignore that!”
“Yanking that pamphlet out of his hand, screwing it up and throwing it in the bin right in front of him, that taught him about real life.”
I invite people into our van, entertain them with coffee and biscuits, give them a warm place to sit for a while, but it never makes any difference. What am I even doing out here?
“Who would have thought that young people could be so engaged with the idea of there being a God? Where do they get the motivation to come out on a freezing winter’s night and talk about Jesus?”
“I know, it’s weird.”
“A whole group of them, playing guitars and singing. Some of them were even dancing. I’ve never seen Christians doing that before; it was quite entertaining. Where’s that pamphlet they gave us?”
“I think you put it in your pocket.”
“That young man we spoke to had such a quiet way with him. He kind of - shone. Here it is. Now, what does this thing say?”
