When I was very young, Christmas morning was magical. My parents always waited until after we went to bed to put the gifts under the tree. They never tried to convince us that Santa Claus brought the gifts, or even that he existed. I do remember thinking that mom and dad snuck out of the house on Christmas Eve to buy the presents. It never occurred to me that they might have bought them sooner and kept them hidden.
I usually crept out of bed in the wee hours of the morning to see what was under the tree. Even though I knew that there would be presents there, it was always magical to actually see them.
Later in my childhood, Mom and Dad actually took us along when they shopped for our gifts. I can remember driving home from a shopping trip in the city, and there would be a package or two double bagged and covered so that we couldn’t peek. In all humbleness, I never tried to sneak a peek inside the bags. I was very tempted to, and falsely accused of peeking, but I honestly never did.
I remember my dad complaining that with only two girls in our family and no boys, that the toys were no fun for him. There was a knitting machine one year that turned out to be too complex for me to set up and use, so Dad knit two scarves with it. He also had fun with an electronics kit he bought for my sister one year. When I was in university, I bought him a Grand Prix race car set for Christmas. He was rather surprised. I told him it was to make up for all those years that there were only girls’ toys on Christmas morning.
Now that I have my own two little girls, Christmas morning is magical again, but now the magic comes from seeing their reaction to the gifts that I have bought for them. I can hardly wait!
