But, it couldn’t hurt to ask.

It was Halloween 2007, but that’s not why the day was important. It was important, because it was her boss’s birthday. And he was more than just her boss. He had encouraged her so much, he’d restored the life, that up until the time she’d met him, had been slowly sucked out of her by those who had used and abused her, and she had to find a way to tell him.
So she bought him a card. And in it, she wrote a simple composition:
“Things I’ve Learned in the Last Year”
The belly of a whale, though slimy and smelly, is the most preferred form of transportation when it gets you where God wants you to go.
Staying up ‘til 3 AM, whether you’re playing Catch Phrase, or moving house, or being fussed at, really isn’t so bad, when you’re with people who you know love and care about you.
The fight, no matter how bad it gets, is worth fighting when you’re worth fighting for.
A man does not have to be old enough to be your father in order to undo the damage your father did, or to begin to repair it. He just has to be a willing vessel in his Master’s hands.
I hope you feel the last year of your life has been well spent. My children and I love and appreciate you and your family more than you could know.
And then she and all her children signed it.

His wife was right when she said he was a big kid at heart, and he loved to play all the arcade games. So her children threw him a birthday party at Gattiland. She gave him the card there.
She knew it encouraged him when she saw for the first time ever that she’d made a grown man cry.
