I kept going to the door to check on them. As I saw them whizz by, I got a funny feeling but I told myself not to worry, "He is almost four. You have to let him grow up sometime and Rebecca's Dad is right there."
I went back to my cleaning. I had so much to do. Plus, I needed to get my Sunday school class lesson ready for the next day. Being a single, working Mom was not always easy.
Just as I finished vacuuming the living room, I heard a loud screeching of breaks, and then a thud. I ran toward the front door crying, "Oh Please God no don't let it be one of the kids."
The first thing I saw was Rebecca on the grass by the side of the road her dad Kneeling next to her,
yelling, "Someone please call 911." Then I saw a car in the road and a lot of people were already gathering in front of it.
I quickly looked for David but didn't see him anywhere. One of my neighbors ran over saying, "David has been hit." I ran to the street and there was my baby, laying like a broken rag doll. The man was crying and saying, "I didn't see them. They just came out of the driveway in front of the parked car. Please forgive me. I'm so sorry."
I could hear him and all the people around me, but I felt like everything was going in slow motion. I knelt down beside my son and cradled his head in my hands. He was skinned up from head to toe. I could feel blood pulsing from the base of his head with every heart beat.
Rebecca had hit the side of the car and was thrown back on the grass, I later learned she had a broken leg. David had been hit by the front of the car and dragged.
As I knelt there with tears running down my face, I began to pray out loud, "God, you said you wouldn't give us more then we can handle. God I handled a divorce, raising these boys all by myself, my home burning, and a car accident, but I can't handle losing my baby! Lord, in the name of Jesus, I'm asking you right now to heal my son. Please God help him."
I heard one of the children say, what is she doing? And a little girl say, She's praying. Then another said, "Why?" and the little girl answered, "Because that is what mother's do!"
The paramedics arrived and said they had been at the end of my street when they heard the call. They saw the deep gash at the base of his skull, and said I had done the right thing to apply pressure. They also said they were pretty sure his neck was broken. They bandaged his head and transported him to the hospital. I kept on praying.
At the hospital they took him directly to x-ray. After what seemed forever, the doctor came out and said, "The good news is nothing is broken! He has a concussion, multiple abrasions, and he has scalped the hair off the top of his head, which will grow back.
The doctor took the bandage from David's head, and asked the paramedic where the gash he had spoken of was. When the paramedic turned David's head to show him, there was no gash! He looked at me and I looked at him, because we both had seen it. We both said, "It was right there." The doctor told us, head wounds bleed a lot and we were probably mistaken.
We both knew God had healed him. I believe it was because I had faith. I was not ashamed to pray out loud, and God knew I could not handle losing David. My son is now 29 years old and a strong Christian man. He doesn't remember much about that day except what he has heard. But he will say, "My Mom prayed in the street that day, because that is what mother's do!"
