So, if you go by this saying all you have to do is eliminate worry from your life and you will be “happy!” I can see where that would definitely lift a load and make you feel a lot lighter and free from care. Is that all it takes to make us happy?
We’ve all, at one time or another, sang the song Happy Birthday to someone, and had it sung to us. A birthday is a time that we celebrate our lives and we usually find something to be happy about, especially on that day. That’s not wrong, it’s a good thing to do, and I would encourage everyone to have a “happy” birthday!
I tend to think that happy comes and goes, according to the circumstances we find ourselves in. It’s great to be happy! I love happy! However, a lot of our life is spent in times of loss or grief of some kind. Maybe disappointment enters the scene of our lives, or a change that is hard to take. When these things happen we find ourselves in a state of “un-happi-ness.”
Happiness can alter your attitude. It is important; but, it is not essential. Joy, on the other hand, is something you need in order to survive. That doesn’t mean that your life is free from loss or grief or pain, just that there is joy in your soul and you can thrive in the midst of it all. Joy comes from a knowing inside of who you are in Christ. It is the joy of the Lord that gives us strength.
So, don’t worry today, be happy instead! And let the joy of the Lord strengthen you…come what may.
“Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." --Ne 8:10b
