The wind in the trees and something clanking on the flagpole were the only sounds as she walked through the cemetery. No voices, or honking car horns, or birds singing. The cemetery was peaceful. And there was his grave, all decorated like the Wal-Mart silk-flower display. She regretted not bringing something to add, but he probably wouldn’t have wanted all this flowery stuff anyway.
“I’m sorry,” she began. It felt strange talking with no one around. She had almost expected it to feel something like prayer, but it didn’t. “I know I haven’t visited your grave ‘til now. I can’t really explain it. I miss you, but you’re not really here. Your name is carved in stone, but where is your laugh? I can’t see your kind and mischievous blue eyes.”
She stood looking at the headstone, feeling a little stupid. She missed him terribly, but his grave didn’t seem to have much meaning for her. She felt more grief when she looked at the other headstones. How many of those other people had not been saved? How many of them were really lost forever? “I think I realize why I haven’t come back here until now,” she said, almost in a whisper. “It’s because you really aren’t here. You’re in Heaven now.”
She turned to leave, but stopped and said, “I’ll see you again one of these days.”
To my Grandpa.
