He preached hard and long, always to the heart of the subject.
If you didn't know about hell and fire already you would by the
end of his sermon. He never waivered away from the subject. Every
ear was open to his words.
It was like the very fire he talked of was blazing in each word.
Believe me there wasn't one from age five years to ninety five years
that didn't sit up and take notice when he began.
This one sunday especially, me and my sister were sitting on the
front pew. We couldn't help but to hear every word, we were almost
in his face. It seemed he preached straight at us. Even though I was
only twelve and my sister only seven. Age had nothing to do with feeling
the fire he breathed at every breath.
We trembled listening to the sermon. He preached on something called
burning your barley fields. We didn't understand the whole thing but
we did get the main idea. We got it already, if you don't do what GOD
wants you to do he will burn your barley fields.
When ever he ended his sermons he offered to pray for anyone that wanted
prayer. We sat and watched several people go up. All for different
reasons. They all had faith. I looked over and my little sister was
crying. I asked was she sick, she shook her head no. I know I bet she
was scared. The sermon today was pretty intense.
Again she shook her head no, she wasn't afraid. I waited with my little
arm around her, holding her while she sobbed. All at once she jumped up
when the last person left the alter. She was so cute. Seven big years
old, pranced right up to that big alter, kneeled and cried her
little heart out.
The preacher came over and lifted her chins smiling at her tears
streaming down her face. He asked with such compassion what she wanted
from God. Everyone in the whole congregation was silent. It is not
everyday a little child pours her heart out on the alter. We all
waited holding our breath waiting for her answer.
In a little soft voice, sniffling each word , she looked up into his
eyes and said. You said God takes the things you love away if you are
not good. Please, I don't want God to burn my barley fields, I don't
want him to take my toys, I love them. She had touched even the
hardest of hearts in the place.
You could hear sniffles and tears all over. Then she spoke again.
Please daddy, you are the pastor tell God not to take my toys.
That day a little girl led the people. Even her own dad the pastor
cried, seeing how sincere she was, understanding God can take anything
we put before him. Those words would make a great sermon for that
Pastor some day. I LOVE MY TOYS.
