Topic: Leadership (03/14/05)
In order to gain and maintain a position of leadership one must demonstrate passion, purpose, and a true desire to help others.

I’ve heard it said that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. If you can convince people that you really care about whatever it is you wish to lead them in, they will follow. You can spout off any number of statistics, drop any number of names, and make any number of promises. But if you don’t follow through, then all you are is a lot of hot air and people won’t follow you because you haven’t shown them that you care.

Jesus is a perfect example of a true leader. He had a passion to see the kingdom of God at work in the lives of every man and woman. His purpose was to make a way for them to be reconciled to the Father in order to see His kingdom at work in their lives. And when it came to the bottom line He was willing to roll up His sleeves – or should I say spread His arms wide – and give it His all to see it succeed.

Is there something that you have given your life to and would do anything and everything to see it come to pass? If there is then you have passion. But passion is not enough.

Does this passion of yours have a purpose? Is it something that will make a true difference in this world? If it does then you have purpose. But passion and purpose are not enough.

The thing that people want to know is…do you care? Will your passion and purpose be of some help to someone? Will it bring a change for the good in the lives of others? Will you be there to see it through to the end? Are you willing to roll up your sleeves and give it your all to see it succeed? If you are then you have passion, you have purpose, but most of all, you have shown that you care for something and someone besides yourself and your agenda. And that’s what people want to see…that you care.

Good title, and some great points within your article. So many want to assume leadership roles without really embracing all that is needed to do the job well. I especially liked your inclusion of this line:

"people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care"

That was one of my favorite lines too. But I think what I liked most about this was the idea that you embraced of follow through. Some times people are idealistic. They think they can help someone heavily burdened, and yes, they do care and do have the passion to help--for that moment. But to really help someone means going down the long road and that is hard. So people need to be sure they can do the whole road or not start at all as the damage done for a partial walk can be severe. Thought you understood the whole process perfectly.

Excellent points. Passion, purpose, and a shepherd's heart. Sounds like the mind and heart of Christ.
