As she passed the nurse’s station for what seemed like the hundredth time, she was forced to stop. She squeezed her husband’s hand and braced against the wall as she breathed through another labor pain. She couldn’t tell if the contractions were closer together or not. But she wasn’t going to dwell on that quite yet. The doctor wasn’t going to check her progress again for another hour. Walk, walk, she told herself. The baby was going to be here before the night was over. She just knew it. She willed it.
Her husband matched her every step, holding her hand, supporting and encouraging her. However, there wasn’t much in the way of conversation between the two of them. She was concentrating solely on the task at hand. Walk, walk, breathe, breathe. Her world was reduced to those two simple tasks.
As she concentrated on putting one step in front of the other, she began to think about all of the walks she would get to share with this new baby as he grew. There would be his first steps, the first time he walked into his kindergarten class, his first walk hand-in-hand with a girl, his walks across the platform to get his high school and college diplomas.
A sharp labor pain took her breath away and brought her quickly back to the present. Her husband held her and coached her as she put her head down, cradling her abdomen. She breathed through yet another contraction. When it was over and she opened her eyes, her gaze fell on the hospital gown. She smiled, thinking, What bride ever thinks about the fact that the next gown they get to don after their wedding gown might be a skimpy, drafty, completely unflattering hospital gown? From satin and lace to cotton. Who knew?
She and her husband continued the walk through the sterile, tile corridors. She found herself wondering what kind of gown her baby’s bride would one day wear as she walked down the aisle to meet him. And a few years later, would he walk the hospital halls with her as well? All of that seemed so distant, so unreal.
Her contractions were definitely coming harder and closer together now. She knew it was just a matter of hours until she was holding that tiny treasure in her arms. She also knew in her heart that in all of the walks she would share with her son, the one that would matter the most would be the walk he would begin with the Creator of the universe.
As they made their way back to the birthing room, she found herself whispering, “You just hold our hands, little one, and we will lead you to the Savior.”
