“Walk” is a favourite word in our house.
We don’t dare say it to the dogs! The consequences are uproarious! It is considered an immediate plan to be brought into fruition without delay. I like their attitude – always most productive! Enthusiasm is actually a name of God! Theo (Greek for God) has the very same roots as enthusiasm. Remember that verse, “Zeal for thy house has consumed Me”? And in Isaiah 54:17 God Himself wears a cloak of zeal, (enthusiasm in high action). Such is the lesson of the dogs!
We used to live close by the sea. It was wonderful, of a beautiful summer’s evening, to walk with some friends to the restaurants at Glenelg, that busy hub of everyone and everything. The bands would be playing, the historic trams trundling down the centre filled with animated sightsee-ers, Children would be leading their parents along the old jetty where the expectant fisherfolk were busy pulling in their lines, and young sweethearts gazed, starry-eyed at each other. We ;could choose food from Mexican to Thai, and everything in between, and then, having set our world to rights, amble back home again watching the electrifying artwork of the sky show that Father produces without fail every night in shades of blue, gold, pink, red, yellow, to dance on the rippling water and mesmerise every one of us with His peace.
Then there were the bushwalks. Miles and miles of them. Lunch in the backpack, and booted up for the hill-climb, we’d spend the day high over the plains of Adelaide, escaping the rat-race, inhaling deeply of fresh mountain air as we looked for a rock to sit on at no luncheon table at all, and be at peace with the world. Before us would stretch, in never-ending glory, a panorama of forested hillside, distant sea, deeply etched rocky ravine and silver streams rippling downwards from dainty waterfalls. There would be no silence of course. The laughing kookaburras would have their raucous comments, only to be matched by those most harmonised of all birds, the black and white magpies, who seem to create new melodies constantly as if it were their purpose in life, which it probably is.
Koalas high in the gum trees would look sleepily non-plussed while all this was going on, and a surreptitious snake would slip superbly, away in the substrata, sharing a shrub with the exquisite (yes, that’s his proper name!) blue wren. Of course you must undergo inspection by the very upright elders of the kangaroo clan, and escape the harassment of the educated emus possessed of the unalterable expectation that people share corn chips. Waddling galahs would have us laughing at their antics in pink and grey, and all nature would be rejoicing in the abundance of the nectar in the thousands of flowers to be found on the ground, in the trees. The only way to notice all this is to take a few hours to walk. Even with a bicycle you miss so very much.
Maybe, walking together in the evening cool, God, Adam and Eve had a conversation like this:-
God: What did you do today Adam?
Eve: We named the Lake of Shining Waters, and I could see my face in it.
Adam Eve tossed her hair every which way to make herself look different. She bunched it up, and put it all to one side, and then covered her face altogether with it. So funny! I’m working on an invention to hold her hair, so she can change it every day!
Eve Then a pretty silver fish came and kissed my face! It looked like that anyway. Adam didn’t like it, did you darling?
Adam: Well, it wasn’t for real. I’m glad I’m the only one around. I like you to myself. I slid right into the water today Yahweh. It was so beautifully cool My feet didn’t touch the ground, but I could still be this way ( vertical). Or I could lie down. Thank you, Yahweh, for the water
God: I thought you’d enjoy that. It has the freshness of My Spirit which I breathed into you. It’s to remind you of Him.
Adam You’re right. It does. I notice sticks lying on top of the water, which gives me an idea…..
Adam enjoyed a stupendous companionship with our Creator until satan stole (or
Adam sold out) that freedom to walk with God.
But Jesus has made “WALK” into our favourite word again!
