I stood gazing out frosted panes of glass while snowflakes danced a silent ballet. The memory of our first meeting remained fresh in my mind.
The invitation called for coffee and pleasant conversation. I accepted for lack of any other pressing engagements on my calendar. The evening started much as expected. New faces, new voices, and new ideas revealed. Chesterton and Lewis. Bunyan and Luther. Somewhere in the recesses of my schooled mind, the message rang a familiar tone.
I glanced at my watch as a young girl joined our table.
Soon, her voice was the only to be heard. She painted a picture of despair and fear. Cold nights spent roaming the streets, searching for someone to care. A change in her voice drew my undivided attention: “That is when He found me.”
Chills ran up my spine as she spoke of The Man. A Rescuer who scooped her out of the reality she thought she would never escape.
Deep within I felt something stirring. Although I had a place to sleep and food to eat, my soul was starving. I knew it. All the education, all the experiences did nothing for the hunger pangs inside. Desperate for nourishment, I raised up my hand.
“How can I find Him?” I asked. The young girl held out her Book. “He is right here.” A circle of believers touched me. I bowed my head, closed my eyes and whispered an invitation of my own.
“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore, I hope in Him.”
