his staff he holds in hardy hand,
like a king upon bejewelled throne,
with sceptre ruling all the land,
his beard is long, his gaze is keen,
his hair is white as winter light,
many things his eyes have seen,
now blinded by his ancient years
yet still as bright his pure heart,
sees through lies and dismal fears,
not by guile nor wicked art,
but only by Truth’s bright flame,
can he perceive and so discern,
what so oft concealed by shame
in the hearts of men doth burn,
and so reveal Heaven’s will
as if by word from Zion Hill.
Emerg’d from the veiled past,
fortified by awesome age,
against men whose doubts would cast
a dismal scorn upon the sage,
unmoved is he, as like a rock
about whom the river flows,
even though the foolish mock
his old heart never slows,
but ever stronger he doth proclaim
the word he carries, in Christ’s name.
Take heed O young, take heed O youth!
Press into Heaven and you shall find
a voice and strength and burning Truth,
a message, which to you assigned
must now be carried, by you alone,
imparted to you from Heaven’s throne.
Into the vale of years, not descended,
but just as strong as the noble sage
whose wondrous life is almost ended,
but fear thee not thy lesser age,
for just as fierce, aye, just as strong,
can be one newly come to God,
as one who walked with Him all along.
