Who ever said diamonds were a girl’s best friend has never been pre-menstrual. How can a diamond help you when you are feeling frumpy and grumpy? Sure, a diamond is pretty and it sparkles and it may provide you with the illusion, for a little while, that you are special, but at the end of the day every other bride has one on her finger too.

A shiny, sparkly rock does nothing to rid your complexion of another red, oozing fountain of puss we call a pimple. A cold, hard stone does nothing to equalize those wild emotions threatening to run you down and consume you like a bunch of greyhounds after a rabbit. A diamond is a precious stone but it has no value what-so-ever when it comes to relieving those tiresome cramps that rob us of so much freedom and joy.

Chocolate, on the other hand, is a great help in time of need. It’s smooth, creamy texture can bring an incredible sensation of comfort and joy. Just the sight of that glossy wrapping paper is enough to trigger silent messages of anticipated pleasure to a weary brain. My taste buds start that dance of delight as soon as the highly manufactured brown gold hits the roof of my mouth. Hmmmm, that’s better.

It is not enough though, is it? The waves of pleasure wash in like the tide, but once it is over the tide recedes and we are feeling low again. Personally, it is my testosterone pack of manly yumminess that promises to satisfy the most. His big strong arms encircling my aching body is a fabulous remedy that rarely fails. His kind words, his simple considerations, his tender kiss on my forehead make my spirit soar far above the frumpiness and the grumpiness. But then he has to go and win some bread for our little family.

Don’t get me wrong, I think diamonds are beautiful and I love to adorn my fingers, neck and ears with these gorgeous jewels, but at the end of the day they just don’t satisfy. Whether I am pre-menstrual or not is beside the point I guess. That regular monthly reminder of my weaknesses is a cause for rejoicing in-as-much that it serves its purpose to focus my eyes once again on my Lord, my Savior and my God. It is a great opportunity to sing that beautiful Psalm, “I lift my eyes up, up to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from you, maker of heaven, creator of the earth!” *

Very interesting perspective. You have a few issues with " 's", but this was nicely done. I loved this phrase: "my testosterone pack of manly yumminess".

I liked your piece. It was a good reminder of the life of the things that give us pleasure for a season. It reminded me that no matter what everyone else in the world thinks of me, my hubby is the best gift I have ever gotten.

Chocolate and a good man! Life doesn't get much better than that, does it? Especially when the good man brings the chocolate :)
