“Hello?”
“Kay, it’s me, Joann. How’s it going, friend?”
“Oh, you know me, busy as always. Actually, you caught me with my feet up.”
“Really, and I thought your house was always in chaos, now that Jessica’s around.”
Kay laughed out loud. “Well, I know now why the Bible says to practice hospitality – it takes practice!”
It was Joann’s turn to let a chuckle escape. “Yeah, I wasn’t sure you’d be able to do it at first. But you were convinced it was the right thing, and you really made it work. I’m proud of you, and of Darlene, too.”
“Thanks, Jo. Oops, I’ve got another call. Bye.”
“Okay, bye.”
It was Darlene on the other line.
“Hi, Kay, just checking up on Jessica. How is she?”
“Oh, she’s napping like a little angel. No problems at all.”
“I know I’ve said it already, but thank you so much for helping me out. Soon I’ll be making enough money to hire a real babysitter and you won’t have to do it anymore.”
“I’m so happy for you, Darlene, but we’ll miss you both so much. You’ll still have to come over for dinner sometimes so we can see how Jessica is growing up.”
“That would be great, Mrs. Tanner.”
“Darlene, please call me Kay. I consider you a friend.”
“All right, Kay. See ya when I come to get Jessica.”
“Okay. Bye.”
Pressing the “end call” button, Kay smiled as she thought about how her life had changed since she and Tom had started helping Darlene and baby Jessica. Before then, Kay would never have helped a stranger in this way. But after she started volunteering at the pregnancy center, her heart softened towards the scared girls who had decided to keep their babies. Many had no family to help out, or had recently left a bad relationship. So, when the center’s director asked for women to babysit while the young moms were in school or working, Kay agreed without hesitation to serve them. It had been worth it just to see the smile on Darlene’s face every time she came to pick up Jessica.
Kay’s phone rang again, startling her. Guess I’ll rest later, she thought.
“Hello?”
“Kay? It’s me, Cynthia, from the center. How’s everything?”
“Hi, Cynthia. Fine, thanks. Do you need me to come in this week?”
“Well, that’s not exactly what I called about. I need you to pray about helping out another girl. I know Darlene won’t need you much longer, and we have numerous requests for assistance right now. Would you consider it and let me know?”
Kay tensed for a moment, wondering if she could handle the pressure. Instantaneously, a calm came over her. Knowing it was the Holy Spirit instilling confidence in her, Kay answered the question. “Sure, Cynthia. I’ll talk to Tom and get back to you soon.”
