Ben’s such a good man, Brenda reflected. There wasn’t a woman alive who could ask for a better father for her children, and Ben’s devotion to Megan, Alissa and Abby was unquestionable to everyone who knew the family. He was a well-respected member of the small community in which they lived, a successful farmer and a faithful husband. Most importantly, Brenda thought, Ben loved the Lord with all his heart and shared his faith with everyone he met in his own quiet, unassuming way. Brenda knew she loved this man – she just couldn’t figure out where the closeness between them had gone.
“When did it happen?” Brenda wondered. “When did that space between us grow from just a little trickle into a gaping chasm?” Things didn’t start out this way, she thought. After 33 years of marriage and three children she just had to wonder what was next for them. Were they destined to live out the rest of their lives in this comfortable nothingness – loving each other without being in love?
Turning toward the beautiful bay window, Brenda began to think back to the day they had moved into this big, old house – onto this farm that had become the very heartbeat of their family. Ben had swept her up into his arms on the big wrap-around front porch, kissed her passionately and then practically leaped across the threshold into the start of their lives together. It was this enthusiasm that brought them both into a laughing heap on the warped old hardwood floor of their new home. Brenda remembered thinking at the time that she should be in a lot of pain from the fall, but the laughter and the love that flowed between them at that moment was just too strong and too wonderful to be overshadowed by any amount of pain. After they had managed to pull themselves together, Ben had tenderly brushed her hair out of her eyes and worriedly asked her if she was hurt. When Brenda assured him that she wasn’t hurt, Ben had burst into tears.
“Oh, Ben,” Brenda exclaimed, “what’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
“No, Bren,” Ben replied through his tears, “I just realized as I looked into your eyes how incredibly blessed I am to be given this gift. You, my love, are heaven here on Earth and I know that if I went to be with Jesus at this very moment it would be the only thing better than spending out each and every day with you.”
The only thing Brenda could do at that point was, of course, join Ben in his tears of joy. From that very moment in time they began their journey of love, the beginning of the life that had brought Brenda to this very pivotal point in time.
“How could I have I forgotten?” Brenda wondered as she blinked back the fresh tears of 33 years of living. “How did I let the beauty of that moment fade into the cares and the worries and the passage of time?”
Rising from her seat on the couch, Brenda walked across the Grand Canyon and knelt down in front of the man who held her heart in his hands. Ben looked surprised at first, but then leaned forward and took Brenda’s hands in his own. He began to speak but Brenda shook her head as if to say, “No, this moment is silent. This moment is sacred.”
Ben nodded in agreement, smiling as he took the love of his life into his arms and closed the space in between them.
