In all honestly, she was paying more attention to the leaves blowing about outside. The wind was picking up.
“Hey Mom, I have to go.†She inched into the calm protest her mom was giving on her sister’s behalf. Her mom would’ve done the same for her and probably was too, knowing her. Their mom was always trying to keep the peace. She was the most compassionate woman Becca knew. Always putting herself in another person’s shoes. Getting down on their level, not ever to throw stones but to see where they were hurt; wanting to see how she could help.
Becca almost got lost in the peace of her mom’s words, thinking maybe she should let her own guard down. Forgive her sister for her latest act of cold bitterness against her and her family. It only took a brief reflection on the pain and her blood began to ripple. The center of her chest hurt. Her stomach churned and there it was, the anger. The familiar anger that was so often between her and Olivia.
It was with a tone that could’ve sliced through a block of ice, that Becca cut in, “I can’t just forget about it, Mom, I’m sorry. I think it would be best if Tom, Jake and I boycott tonight.â€
It was as her words dropped that she heard someone come into the kitchen. Jake must’ve wandered in from his nap. Seeing his little face sent cool soft tears down Becca’s face.
“Mom, Jake just got up. I’ll have to talk to you later. I love you.†Becca smiled as her mom told her how much she loved her girls and to give her love to Jake.

Jake was excited! Tonight would be so much fun! He hummed to himself a song they had learned at VBS. He loved the part that went, “Down in my heart! Where?†Jake hummed it over and over. He set up everything for him and his cousin Toby. He knew his mommy must’ve been sad about dinner getting messed up. Why else would she have sounded like that or had those tears on her face?
Jake had decided he would surprise her by helping with the boy cots. He had heard her tell Grandma about them. He loved being with Toby. A sleepover at his house would be awesome! Jake smiled at all he had set up. It was good.
“Mommy!â€
“Yes, Jake?â€
“Come here! But close your eyes!†Jake laughed.
Becca had known her son was up to something. Maybe fake ‘smores with his bears, since it was raining. She could only hope.
Before entering the den, she closed her eyes. She heard Jake giggle as she felt his warm little hand take hers. The moment sent a smile across her face that could chase every grey cloud away outside.
“Okay Mommy! Open them!†Jake practically shouted.
Becca was confused, “What are these for honey?â€
With a huge smile on his face Jake answered, “Toby and me, silly!†Jake let out a couple of hops to release some of his excitement. “You told Grandma you needed boy cots. I got them ready for me and Toby!†Jake clapped his hands in approval.
Becca’s heart sank into a puddle as she figured out what happened with her boycott and her son’s boy cots. Her phone rang before she could speak.
As she was drawn into the words, she looked out the window to the storm that now filled her soul. She sat down on to her son’s little boy cots and felt them mock her as tears spilled down her face.
“She has to be okay. We’ll pray. God will keep her. Bring Toby over here. We’ll take care of him and tell her, I love her.†Becca’s voice quivered. She could barely draw a full breath. The anger that had filled her bones felt so silly now. The bitterness she herself had held now felt brittle as it fell like scales from her eyes.
Becca prayed for Olivia and the other driver.
“Jake, Toby’s on his way.â€
