“Ken, when are you ever going to do something besides watch TV?” she interrogated
as she disgustedly looked around at all that needed attention. Cheryl once more took
her mental tally: The ice maker needed fixing, the faucet dripped, house trim required
painting, and several other ‘Honey Do’ jobs awaited. “I wish you would get busy and
DO something!”
Drip... Drip... Drip...
Annoyed, Ken ate his sandwich, and lounged on the couch watching cable reruns of
“Bonanza.” She was more irritating than the dripping faucets! He shouted, “Haven’t
you ever heard of the scripture in Proverbs that says ‘a quarrelsome wife is like a
constant dripping on a rainy day?’”
Drip... Drip... Drip...
Cheryl was doing her Saturday chores of laundry and cleaning while thunder bellowed
and lightning filled the sky. Rain poured from the heavens. “Ah,” sighed Ken, plopping
down on the couch, “what a great day to just watch television.”
Ken, still sprawled on the couch two hours later, had fallen asleep. Drip... drip... drip...
He awoke knowing something was wrong. “Agh! I’m all wet! Cheryl! Cheryl!”
Cheryl ran from the kitchen where she’d been fixing dinner, “What’s the matter, Ken?”
“Why did you pour water on me?” he hollered.
“I didn’t! Why would I pour water on you, Ken?”
Drip... Drip... Drip...
They looked up and saw huge rain drops suspended from the plaster ceiling. Hanging
there until large enough to... splat! Ken was soaked with rain!
Cheryl chided, “Have you ever heard of the scripture in Ecclesiastes that says ‘if a man
is lazy, the rafters sag; if his hands are idle, the house leaks?’” and she stomped off to
the kitchen.
Drip... Drip... Drip...
Ken moved the couch from under the leaky ceiling and put a bucket on the floor to
catch the raindrops. “Hmmph! Lousy rain! I can’t see the TV as well from here!” he
complained as he plopped on the couch again.
Sunday morning brought brilliant sunshine. Ken and Cheryl woke early and began to
get ready for church. “Wouldn’t miss it,” they always said if someone asked about their
church attendance.
Pastor Reynolds read Ephesians 5. “Those of you that are married, did you hear that
last verse? ‘Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife
must respect her husband.’ Now, why do you suppose God says it just like that? Well,
here’s the answer: What a man most desires is to know he is respected. And what a
woman desires most is to know she is loved. Men, love your wives, putting them first,
like Christ loves the church. Women, respect your husbands as the head, as Christ is
the head of the church.”
Conviction pierced the hearts of both Ken and Cheryl. All the way home they meditated
on what the pastor had spoken. Both knew they could do much more to show their
love and appreciation for each other.
After parking the car and going into the kitchen, Cheryl took Ken’s hands and said,
“Ken, I’m sorry I’ve nagged you so. And I want to thank you for working hard at your job
and providing for me.”
Looking her in the eyes, Ken softly spoke, “Cheryl, I’m sorry I have ignored needed
repairs around the house. I love you and want you to know I’m going to change.” They
hugged, vowing to themselves and each other to follow God’s Word. They would work
harder at keeping God and His will at the center of their marriage.
A few months later, raining outside, but dry inside, Cheryl happily looked all around.
The faucets were fixed, the painting done, and plenty of ice filled the ice tray. The roof
was repaired and the ceiling was newly painted. Ken sat on the couch folding a load of
towels Cheryl had just washed and dried. “Honey,” Cheryl called, “dinner is ready,
come and eat.”
Ken entered the kitchen and eyeing the mouth-watering bounty laid out before him said,
“Thanks, Sweetie,” and gave Cheryl a big hug.
Cheryl gave him a peck on the cheek and said, “Thank you, Ken, for all you do around
here,”
And they sat down to eat together, enjoying each other’s company, and no where to be
heard was any drip... drip... drip...
