Mr. Gardner sat his books on the desk and opened his planner, and without looking up he said,
“I would like to introduce you to someone new, I’ m sure I don’t have to remind any of you of your first day here, but if you take the time to remember you’ll know just what to do.”
He extended his arm towards the door he had just entered and the entire class attention focused on a robust young man with burgundy colored hair, his eyes looking down towards the floor.
“Come on in” Mr. Gardner said beckoning to him with his hand. “This is Chis Athymum; his parents and he just moved here from the south.” “Would you like to tell us anything about yourself?” he said. Chris looked up for the first time and flashed the class a smile that made all the girls swoon. Blossoms nearly fell to the floor.
“Hi….” He said nervously…."uhhh, well my name is Chris and I just moved here from the south” the classroom began to giggle. Chris looked even more nervous now. “Well, I guess you already know that; but you don’t know that I’m happy to be here and can’t wait to get to know all you better” smiling he looked back at Mr. Gardner and asked “Where do I sit?”
“Well, you can sit anyplace you feel comfortable” Like over there between Iris and Lilly” “Raise your hands girls so he knows who you are.” “or perhaps next to Rose, and there’s also a seat behind her brother Bud” “Come on now guys raise your hands, he doesn’t know you”. “I know, “Mr. Gardener said scratching his head. “probably the best place for you is next to Susan over there…..uhhh… Susan?where did you get the black eye?” Susan smiled embarrassed and replied “My mother and father had date night last night so I had to baby sit my brother. He and I were playing in the yard last night and he kicked me while I was pushing him on the swing. “You’ve got to be careful” Mr. Gardener said.
“I think he should sit next to me” said a bold yet sultry voice from near the rear of the class. Everyone turned to look at Ginger Pink, she had a smile on her face and she beckoned to Chris.
“Well thank you but I like to be near the sun and if you don’t mind I’ve been eyeing one of those window seats over there he said point to a row of young men.
“Wonderful choice!” Mr. Gardner said pointing “These are from left to right ….. We’ve got two Al’s Al Liam and Al Stroemeria”
“Excuse me” Al Liam said clearing his throat “everyone just calls me Liam…. You can do the same”
“Thank you” said Chris.
On with the intro’s said Mr. Gardener Beau Vardia there, and right next to him Sweet William.
The class chuckled.
William stood up.
“Just call me William or Will. My legal name is actually Sweet William, some notion my mother had in her head when I was born about how sweet I smelled; but I’ll have a meeting out back with any classmate who calls me sweet beside Mr. Gardener here to convince them I’m not that sweet anymore”
“Thank you” replied Mr. Gardener, clearing his throat nervously.
“Now I have quite unconsciously just completed my roll call. All except you three over here.” Said Mr. Gardener, looking surprised. He pushed his glasses up on his nose and said “so I’ll just introduce you now”
“this is Heather, Lilac, and Gardenia”
“Hello” they replied in unison.
“Now you have just met your new classmates. I think this will be a good year for you…….If you’ll kindly open your book called Plant Life and we will pick up where we left off yesterday on page 52.”
