New Year’s Eve 2028
Slate and Iris Mazarin smiled at each other from across the room. After 29 years of marriage she still blushed under his gaze. He grabbed their coats and made his way through the intimate group of friends they had invited to celebrate the New Year and see the Lunar Eclipse.
When he reached her side, he helped her into her coat, whispering in her ear, “Let’s run away together.” He stared into her sparkling baby blues and she back into his.
“To the balcony? You’ve got it. There’s a Blue Moon tonight…” She slipped her hand in his and they sneaked out to their private balcony that overlooked Blue Lake. Slate slipped his strong arms around his wife and together they looked into the night sky and back to once upon a Blue Moon.
January 31, 1999
Iris Ashland was 19 and working at a coffee shop near Seattle Pacific University. She couldn’t afford to attend yet, but she would. She had to get an education, get a career and get out of the spot of a town she’d grown up in. She longed for something big; she could feel it in her soul. She had just finished her shift and was headed back to her Grandma’s. That’s when the divine encounter happened that would change her life forever.
Slate Mazarin was 19 and attending SPU. He was part of Campus Crusade. Tonight they were having a Blue Moon event at the Conservatory. A Blue Moon was a rare event, the second full moon of the month. Tonight after viewing the night sky, there’d be a Christian band, then testimonies, followed by an invitation. He prayed as he passed out the flyers, but not just for anyone.
‘I know I’m young, but please send me someone to really care for God. I feel it in my soul. I’m ready. Thank you God.’ And before Slate could say his ‘Amen’ that’s when it happened. He walked right in to her. ..
It happened in a whirlwind, and was over. The girl stormed off. She took a flyer, just trying to be nice, he figured. Slate could see something in her eyes though, she needed to be there.
Later that evening Iris couldn’t believe she was standing there, looking up at the night sky, freezing her backside off! There had been something different about that guy with the flyers. It was his eyes, they sparkled. Maybe she’d meet him and find out what made him so, so whatever that was.
Staying, Iris listened surprised she enjoyed the Christian music. They were talking about Jesus, someone she hadn’t paid much attention too. That’s when she realized, their eyes did the same thing too. Then that guy she’d met earlier got up. He said his name was “Slate” something and as he talked she began to really hear.
“There’s a Blue Moon tonight, a rare event. But nothing is as rare event as the night Jesus came down. Nothing is as rare as the love of Jesus. You can’t find a love like His just anywhere, but you can find it anytime. All you need do is turn to Him, right where you are and He is there waiting for you. He sees you and all that you are and all that you will be and all that He has for you. All you need to do is ask Him and His love is all yours. If you have any questions or want to pray with someone, please just find one of us, in the ‘Be like the Moon, reflect the Son’ t-shirts. Thanks.” Slate closed with a prayer and jumped off the stage. As he did, he knew one thing, he had to find her. He’d seen her, the girl from earlier that day. She’d actually come! And he was sure he had seen tears streaming down her face. Before he could even begin to look, he heard a voice.
“Is it the Jesus in you that makes your eyes shine?”
It was her. Tears were still there on her face. Her smile was amazing.
“Yes.” Slate answered, noticing the change in her from earlier and asking, “How about you?”
Iris blushed, “They shine already?”
New Year’s 2028
“Once or was that twice a Blue Moon, Slate and Iris Mazarin were married, March 31, 1999 and began their lives as missionaries for our Lord...” so went the toast.
