going to the Fair or to a movie or watching the sun set over the ocean. He takes pleasure in the little things I sometimes miss and he looks at life in a unique, fresh way.
We once spent an hour watching an ant hill. I saw how industrious the ants were, Dale saw how they respected each other and how they all got along. He says that the bees are
“kissing” the flowers in the garden and the clouds are playing peek-a-boo with the sun in a summer sky.
He never forgets a birthday. There are a lot of people in the facility where Dale lives and he can name off everyone's birth date, knows where they were born too. Once he bought me a drawing tablet with charcoal pencils and two bananas. When I asked him why he bought the bananas he smiled and said “Because I had money left over”. That gave us both “happy feet”.
Not everyone appreciates Dale. Sometimes he hears the unkind remarks and he tells me that it is “raining in his heart”. He knows he isn't like everyone else and, frankly, he doesn't worry about it. Because it doesn't get him down it doesn't bother me either. He knows that rainbows come out after a storm.
God gave me a special gift when he brought Dale into my life. When we're together I have the heart of a child and I see the world as a delightful place where bugs and flowers and sunshine remind me of how much I am loved. I think that gives God “happy feet” too.
